The setting out machine for tanneries can either be continuous or discontinuous, if continuous it is called a through feed setting out machine. In both machines the surface spreading is achieved with a blade and the fat is absorbed with a felt (or felt sleeve).

A discontinuous setting out machine is the traditional way for doing the setting out, that means to increase the surface of the hides and to absorb the fats. Productivity is not very good but the job is done properly.

The through feed setting out machine has been developed by BAUCE in the late 1990’s in order to increase the productivity of the tanners. The PRC 4 and after MVC 4 machines became then very popular.

For the continuous setting out machines, Dollfus & Muller is manufacturing synthetic felts of 8500 grams/m² with a special finish in order to allow an easy sliding of the hides.

For discontinuous setting out machines, Dollfus & Muller is manufacturing sleeves. Sleeves can either be mixed, synthetic or only with wool.
